Water cleanup and repairing the cause can be separate jobs. Before authorizing work, ask who will handle each part and what is included in the written scope.
What to explain on the first call
Describe when you noticed the water, whether the source is known, and which rooms and materials are wet. Mention a plumbing leak, appliance leak, storm entry or possible sewage separately. Give your city and ZIP code first so the recipient can check whether a suitable provider is available. You do not need to diagnose the damage before calling.
Questions about extraction and drying
Ask whether the proposed visit includes an assessment only or permission to begin work. Request an explanation of water removal, equipment placement, moisture checks and any proposed removal of flooring or wall material. Ask how the provider decides that drying is complete and whether you will receive records of those checks.
Separate cleanup from repairs
Ask whether fixing a pipe, roof leak or other source is included or needs a separate contractor. Reconstruction, replacement flooring and damaged belongings may be separate from the initial cleanup. A useful estimate identifies the areas to be treated, exclusions, equipment charges and how changes to the scope will be approved.
Floodwater and possible contamination
Stay out of floodwater; it may contain electrical hazards, waste and debris. Tell the recipient if sewage or outside floodwater may be involved. Follow local emergency instructions rather than entering a hazardous area to take photos. See the CDC guidance linked below.
Water in a basement or crawl space
Describe standing water or water-damaged materials as a cleanup issue. This referral line does not offer foundation repair, crawl space encapsulation, sump installation or general waterproofing. If a structural or drainage repair is needed, arrange that separately with an appropriate contractor.

Does the call arrange plumbing or foundation repair?
This line concerns restoration and cleanup referrals. Ask the recipient which work can be arranged; plumbing, structural repairs and preventive waterproofing may need separate contractors.
