Crawl space insulation falling down
Insulation falls because it got wet, and it got wet because the crawl space is humid. Putting it back up without fixing the moisture just schedules the same job again.
Almost everyone treats this as a fastening problem. It is not. Insulation that has been in place for twenty years does not suddenly lose its grip — it gets heavy.
Fallen insulation is a moisture reading you can see from the crawl space hatch.
Why it falls
Fibreglass batts between floor joists are held by friction, wire supports or staples through a paper or foil facing. All of that is sized for the weight of dry fibreglass.
Wet fibreglass is substantially heavier. As crawl space humidity drives moisture into the batts, they gain weight, sag away from the subfloor, pull through the staples or slip past the wire, and come down. The paper facing degrades in damp conditions too, so the staples tear out of a facing that has lost its strength.
Then it lands on the ground, wicks moisture from the soil, and stays wet.

The last is the common Tennessee pattern, and it is the one that responds to humidity control rather than to drainage.
Why re-hanging it is the wrong move
Three reasons, in order of how much they cost you:
It will fall again. Nothing has changed. The same humidity in the same space produces the same weight gain over the same interval.
It has lost most of its value. Fibreglass insulates by trapping still air. Water displaces that air, and batts that have been repeatedly wetted and compressed do not recover their loft. You are re-hanging something that is no longer doing the job you are paying for.
It may be holding mould. The paper facing is organic and stays damp. Putting it back against the subfloor puts growth in contact with the floor structure and upstream of the air that rises into your house.
The right sequence
- Remove the fallen insulation entirely. Bag it. Damp fibreglass on the ground is a moisture reservoir and a mould substrate.
- Measure the humidity before deciding anything else. A week with a hygrometer.
- Find and fix the water, if the soil is wet — grading, downspouts, drainage.
- Decide the strategy, which is a real fork:
- Vented crawl space: cover the soil with a vapour barrier, insulate the subfloor, and accept that Tennessee summers will keep it damp. Cheaper, less effective.
- Sealed crawl space: vapour barrier, sealed vents, insulation moved to the perimeter walls, dehumidifier. More expensive, and it is what actually solves this in this climate.
- Do not insulate the subfloor of a sealed crawl space. If the space is conditioned, the insulation belongs at the boundary, which is now the walls.
The Tennessee argument for sealing
The vented approach asks outdoor air to dry the space. Tennessee summer dew points sit above 70°F for months, and crawl space surfaces sit near ground temperature. Warm humid air on cool surfaces condenses — the ventilation is delivering the moisture, not removing it.
That is the mechanism that pulled your insulation down. Re-hanging batts in a vented crawl space here is a maintenance cycle, not a repair.

If you only do one thing
Remove it and leave it out while you work out the moisture.
An uninsulated crawl space costs you some heating energy. A crawl space full of wet fibreglass on the ground costs you humidity, odour that reaches the living space, and a substrate for growth — and it is insulating nothing while it sits there. Empty and dry beats insulated and wet, every time.
Common questions
Can I just staple it back up?
You can, and it will fall again. Wet fibreglass is heavy, and once it has been saturated it has lost most of its insulating value anyway. Re-hanging compressed, damp batts returns almost nothing.
Does wet insulation still insulate?
Barely. Fibreglass works by trapping still air, and water displaces that air. Saturated batts lose most of their R-value, and they stay damp far longer than the framing around them.
Should I insulate the floor or the walls?
In a sealed, encapsulated crawl space, the perimeter walls — that brings the space inside the building envelope. In a vented crawl space, the subfloor. Insulating the subfloor of a space you have sealed is the wrong combination.
Is fallen insulation a health problem?
Damp fibreglass supports mould growth on the paper facing and on any dust and organic matter in it, and crawl space air moves upward into the house. It is worth removing rather than leaving on the ground.
What does it cost to sort out?
Removal and replacement runs roughly $1,500 to $4,000 depending on square footage. Doing it without addressing humidity means paying it again in a few years.
